Accomplishments
- February 2007 - Grand Opening of the Vocational Program at Bayshore Middle School. The Vocational classroom is designed to teach autistic teenagers how to handle basic chores and responsibilities. Fully funded and set-up by IMPACT.
- I.M.P.A.C.T. parents, and families raised $45,000 on various fundraisers the past two years to help to continue to fulfill our mission.
- I.M.P.A.C.T., parents and families raised over $65,000 for the National Alliance for Autism Research Walk-a-thon receiving awards for our efforts.
- Sent newsletters including information about community activities, current research and legislation pertaining to autism and related disabilities.
- Held educational lectures free of cost for anyone interested.
- Conducted membership drive to reach out to new parents in the community.
- Instituted Circle of Friends Program in schools to give typically developing children a chance to help others.
- Increased community awareness of Autism through school assemblies, essay contest, fundraisers, library displays, and teaching classes at local colleges.
- Provided the District with the information and money necessary to send teachers to an educational seminar on the latest and most promising method of teaching autistic children language skills (Verbal Behavior).
- Provided Middletown Board of Education with a model program for paraprofessionals.
- Recognized the importance of the paraprofessionals involvement in fulfillment of our mission through luncheons, awards and continued education.
- Submitted and received a Proclamation from the Middletown Township Committee adopting April as "Autism Awareness Month" in Middletown, 2002.
- Submitted and received a Proclamation to the Board of Education adopting April as "Autism Awareness Month" in Middletown Schools, 2001,2002.
- Presently developing a mentor program to help new parents and parents in need.
- Established a parent library so all parents can begin to access more and better information.
- Donated approximately $3,000.00 in books and educational supplies to the District and Middletown Township Library to facilitate access to updated information about Autism and Related Disabilities.
- Created a safe and secure pre-school playground with equipment and enclosure.
- Supplied district teachers with fundamental supplies and materials necessary for the education of special education students totaling close to $8,000.00 ie. Digital cameras, software, reading programs, books, furniture, playground equipment, and more.
- Established a Middle School Program for our Children which began in the fall of 2001.
- Created and implemented the position of Autistic Coordinator for Middletown, 2001.
FUTURE GOALS:
- Continue to Improve the Education of children with Autism and Related Disabilities.
- Continue to Educate the Public about Autism
- To plan for a meaningful adult life for individuals with Autism and related disabilities.
